Have you ever taken part in one of those leadership games where you have to make your way out of a maze? There’s one simple thing that enables the participants to win instantly but it usually takes them forever to figure it out. Some time ago, in a small Bible Study group in Franklin, TN, we discovered the main point- which is one that we discuss here on this show often- that we need to ask for help from others outside ourselves.
Jennie Schut is with me again to wrap up her interview. In this second half, she relays a story of a time when she was willing to sleep in her car rather than ask for help. Today, we’ll also talk about our tendency as Christians to jump into forgiveness without honoring a very important step in the process first. On a lighter note, she talks about her affinity for the smell of bee hives and displays the glee of a child learning to play as an adult.
Jennie shares openly about a time when she was hurt in a relationship and how she’s hurt others too. I so appreciate how she says, “it’s still being told; it’s in flux…” In other words, it ain’t over! You’ll love how honest and gentle this soft spoken woman is.
She talks about the thing that made her “want” Jesus as a child and what drew her deeper into relationship with Him later in life. and how much joy she felt recently as she participated in “performance art” during a sermon in a church service.
I’ll share what I experienced at Jennie’s gathering last week around the release of her new, brilliantly designed 2nd edition of “Waking Up Grey.” It was a magical, scandalous, glorious night of celebration and wonder as we listened to women share how God’s Hand has transformed their spiritual and creative journeys through Jennie’s work. To think, before her book, Waking Up Grey, I never even knew writing was an art form!!!
Jennie will be uploading some video footage of the shares from the gathering…. as you’re watching the excerpts there (http://www.flyforward.org) just don’t laugh at the fluffy brown skinned girl with the thick, dorky glasses AND braces on her teeth. (Because I’ve always believed that going through my most awkward stage in my mid 50’s would be really fun!)
I’ll tell you how excited i am about taking a break this summer from podcasting full time. I’ll be doing things around the house I haven’t done in a while; like laundry. I may cook an actual meal this week. I wonder if my kids will even know what to do with a dish that hasn’t had cheese melted all over the top of it.
I will also update you on my 25th anniversary celebration. if you have any wedding/anniversary traditions you’d recommend, please send them my way on instagram or facebook!!! (Can you tell? I’m trying hard to keep in touch with you bc as I confess at the end of this episode, I’m feeling a little insecure that you’re gonna forget all about me while I’m on break- thus, my poor rendition of an old 80’s song in the outtakes…..)
Since recording, we figured out a solution to the potential ring-being-thrown-into-the-pool-along-with-the-rose petals-problem. (because worrying about worst case scenarios has always, for me, been the definition of a good time.)
To help out the cutest flower girl ever (my little buddy Hayden,) we will have a ring bearer (my other little buddy, Max!) I will send you pics on instagram bc you simply MUST see these two children!!! OMG!!!!! They are sooooo beautiful. When I first moved here to this country, I thought blond haired, blue eyed kids were not even real.
I will read you a quote from Jennie’s book “Waking Up Grey” that will inspire you as you go about your day, moving to the rhythm of Grace, doing the things you need to do and the thing that you can’t NOT do too. I will implore you to tell your story through your art- the world needs to hear it, see it, feel it….because as you are maintaining a personal, intimate, real relationship with your Master Creator, Jesus Christ, your work will point others to Him.
You’ll love Jennie’s art- go to jennieschutart.com. I’m thinking about ordering one of Jennie’s copper leaf pieces on canvas for my front office/storage room, now that it’s all cleared out and looks like a fresh work of art. 🙂 (Thanks to my friend, Kerry V.!)
I can’t wait to get my hands on this new art journal that Jennie’s redone for us- “Waking Up Grey” -I’m gonna dive into it on our first roadtrip this week. Speaking of roadtrips, if you’re thinking about taking a roadtrip to Nashville this summer, I will tell you about my favorite hang where you can get a legendary smoothie or cronut (which is a cross between a croissant and a donut) or a good honest cuppa!! And I’ll introduce a new hashtag for you to post on instagram about your own artistic endeavors-because as Jennie says, “Great art can come out of solitude with Jesus but celebration comes in the context of community!” Go to #heylovecreative and share!!!
Go order your copy of the second edition of WUG, start a group in your town, and bring them here to Nashvegas for a retreat. Flyforward.org will have all the info you’ll need. Please do let me know if you come this way!!!
If you’re like a friend of mine who wonders what to write in your review, I offer my 2 cents (to just write about one favorite episode, like you’re writing to a friend.) And thank you, Friend, for taking the time to do that for those who may come after you to check us out!
Listen to the song “Why It Matters” by Sarah Groves. Really, that whole record (Add to the Beauty) would be a great soundtrack to go along with you after you listen to this episode…. https://www.discogs.com/Sara-Groves-Add-To-The-Beauty/release/3048008
And just for kicks, if ya get a chance, go watch the 80’s band Glass Tiger (complete with parachute pants and big, big hair) sing the song I’m attempting in the outtakes; glass tiger don’t forget me
Just a few more ways for you to live out love!
Till next time,
