In this episode, we are going to have the pleasure of hearing from Barbara Rainey. This is Part 1 of a 2 part interview and I’m sure you will get a lot out of it, so don’t mind the lawn mower in the background…. the weather has been so nice here in sweet Tennessee, we just can’t bring ourselves to close the windows lately.
Since Miss B is known as the First Lady of Family Life, it would be tempting to assume that she is a woman who has it all together….but as you can hear in the teaser at the top, she is quick to confess that she is keenly aware of her spiritual bankruptcy outside of Christ. She admits freely “I can’t do this” and shares why this is a good thing.
I’m linking to a song by Plumb below, which encapsulates this sentiment perfectly. It’s been the cry of my heart for a while now…
Miss B is reluctant to call herself a “thought leader,” but I’ve gleaned much wisdom about loveliness and beauty and family and love from this woman over the years. She also enlightens me today on cool, arty things like “negative space” – a term I’d never heard of….
Nearly a decade ago, I asked Miss B to pray for my hubby who was traveling through her town during a blizzard. I’ll tell you how she won my heart by her response.
We talk about her latest book, Letters to My Daughters in which she effectively likens marriage to all forms of art. Miss B talks about being dependent on Jesus for everything, especially when it comes to being a wife – this is a difficult thing to learn (inadequacy/dependency) when you’re a perfectionist.
We also talk about rewards of submission and why she loves Precept Bible studies. (You’ll get an idea of how I really feel about colored pencils….) and you’ll learn what a “Round Robin” is.
I’ll also share with you some of my “wedding plans” (our vow renewal ceremony is this summer) and what I’m doing differently this time around, 25 years later, now that I’ve been freed and delivered from my own defeated perfectionist syndrome.
