Hey Love, I’m going to be sharing with you my most embarassing moment at the top of this episode…. I’d alluded to it during Ep 13- the Amy Grant episode- but hundreds of you (no, not really, just two people) asked me to share mine so today I will do that. (Still cracks me up every time!)Episode 16 “Living Fully = Struggling Well” w/Stephen James
My guest is Stephen James, a sought after counselor in Nashville at Sagehill Counseling, where he serves as founder and director. He will teach us what it means to live fully. He touches on Jewish history, meaning and purpose and how God is bigger than our theology. I’ve known Stephen for years and any time I’m around him, I’m reminded it’s ok to be human. And lonely. And weak. (Merry Christmas- here’s another cheerful installment from Heylovepodcast! :-0)
I gotta tell ya, this man is brilliant and some of what he says goes over my head…. I have to ask him for clarification several times. If it gets to feeling a little too “clinical” for ya, hang on because he tells a story about how he recently got in touch with his inner child that has echoes of Eden. I won’t give it away but suffice it to say, it involves a grown man standing amongst the trees during a summer rain, stark naked. He explains how that experience has made him a better, more compassionate counselor.
Stephen says to fully live, we need to own our feelings in this order;
If I had a dime for every time I jumped to “expressing” without the first two steps, I’d be rich. He also has a very interesting take on empathy/sympathy- these are very different from what you may have heard…. Finally, he helps me differentiate between pity and sadness.
You will for sure get a kick out of the outtakes today- I explain in my entirely too long set up that we have a little bit of an armadillo problem in our backyard. That and I’ve been listening to Christy Nockels’ Christmas cd nonstop so I’ve had armadillos on my brain AND a certain flower that blooms in the dead of winter-which is a beautiful picture of hope that IS Christmas. So in my head, where wires have been known to get crossed, I started singing the wrong words to Christy’s tune during the mic check one day- complete with key change- and you get to hear it in the outtakes.
