Hey Love, thanks for joining us for Part 2 of my conversation with the Marreros.
If you don’t already know this family, you’re gonna fall in love with them by the end of this thing. Sandy (the mom) is once again an open book about the bitter and the sweet of grief, which she describes as a dance, after losing her eldest son, Leland. They laugh, they cry, they fold laundry….
This episode is just over an hour long- it’s worth every drop but if you wish to fast forward past my commentary, go to 11:45 where the interview starts.
Sandy’s daughters are Susanna and Sara, and each one shares memories of a big brother who LOVED life hard! They explain how one of the sisters won a princess parking place using questionable craftiness (according to her mama,) what constitutes a walk in closet and smack talk around rival football teams (Leland, being a hard core fan of the University of Tennessee and Sara pretending to believe that her Tennessee Tech team stood a chance against UT just to get him riled up….)
You’ll hear Sara convey tenderly, a very special word stamped on Leland’s hand as he passed from life to LIFE. That word is the one all 3 of these women chose (each on their own) to write on the stones they were given at the end of Episode 10 to add to their Rocks of Remembrance collection. You’ll hear a little of their discussion about that in the outtakes.) If you haven’t heard Part 1 yet, go back and grab that- we’ll wait right here 🙂
In this episode, you’ll also hear me share about my relationship envy and what I intend to do about it. If you want the kind of closeness between your kids that you hear between the Marreros, check out Jen Wilkin’s paradigm shifting talk from The Gospel Coalition Conference (link below.)
You’ll hear my hesitancy in asking a certain question (shoulda gone with my gut and avoided it but I couldn’t get my mouth to shut up in time….) I had given my guests the freedom to “pass” on any question I ask… Sandy does, ever so politely, refuse on behalf of her girls…but she does answer it herself and SO graciously. And know what? It doesn’t turn out to be as humiliating for this novice podcaster as I thought it would be to be told “No.”
I’ve had several women tell me they’re now following Sandy’s instagram. The girls are active there too. So encouraging. Here are all their instagram handles-
sandywmarrero, whose last post showed a photo of her home, overtaken by tarps and plastic sheets, as they finish the remodeling job they started before Leland’s accident.
Read Susanna’s blog post about leading her youngest sis in a prayer of repentance – it’s a “Come to Jesus” story that will encourage you down to your bones. And if you’ve ever experienced “re entry” syndrome upon returning home from a mission trip, you’ll appreciate her post about her struggle transitioning back to life in America after spending a summer in South Africa; http://motelsandmacaroons.blogspot.com
And Sara- that girl- the Word of God continues to ooze out of her! It’s like breathing. No wonder her art is making scripture verses “dance on the page.” Check out her offerings on etsy; https://www.etsy.com/shop/SaraMarreroArt?ref=search_shop_redirect I just hired her to design our 25th wedding anniversary announcement. 🙂
