Hey Love,
I spoke to a group of empty nesters recently. Here’s a little something I wrote for them; it’s my wish for you too as you enter into this new phase (if not now- someday!)
Our home is quite large; I’ve not noticed before
So spacious and clean; so peaceful and ordered
No clutter to pick up on stairs, or in rooms
No more olfactory nerve – offending shoes
I can rise when i want after a full night’s rest.
Not a twig out of place in my now empty nest.
I’m gonna try something a little crazy today-
I think I’ll eat a meal hot, for a change.
What do eggs even taste like, fresh off the stove?
How does butter react to a WARM piece of toast?
I can actually sit down, with time to digest.
But I’ll put off the dishes in my now empty nest.
I wonder how Alecia Keys might sound
At this hour, turned up on my Bose speaker loud?
and just what would happen to this old coffee table?
Is the wood strong enough? Is it sturdy & able?
To hold a mid life crisis bearing down?
(&) What if she were to start dancing around?
When the song is over, the dancer freezes in pose,
Whose face was that smiling in the corner just now?
Her cheeks go flush, “Oh, me? Don’t you mind…”
Then sheepishly, “Have you been there the whole time?”
The familiar one tenderly takes his bride by the hand
And carefully climbs up, like a not so young man.
He lacks grace, but he’s cute and he smiles with his eyes
“May I have this dance for the rest of our lives?
Synched imperfectly as partners, clumsy at best,
But we’re in it together, in our now empty nest.
