I know everyone’s been writing about it and talking about it- the now infamous video clip of John MacArthur slamming Beth Moore- (If you somehow missed it, here’s a link.)
Really, I don’t know that I have much to add to the conversation that hasn’t already been much more eloquently said. I do, however, have some things to say to Brother John. So I’m attaching a letter I sent him.
It is my prayer that after reading it, you’ll feel compelled to write a letter to him also- but only if your end goal is the glory of God. The hope is that John MacArthur will be brought to repentance (not for what he believes, but for how he communicated it,) and understanding first that only the Spirit of God can bring a man to the point of repentance…
Perhaps this letter, (along with yours, and maybe dozens, hundreds of others?) might be used as a chisel in the Hand of God to bring some degree of remorse that’s struggling to break free. Think of it as Michelangelo approached a piece of stone- according to the Italian Renaissance artist, he was merely releasing the sculpture trapped inside.
Maybe your letter will be used to help him release his pride; maybe your words will give a mortal man the courage to do what he knows he needs to do.
I say that with not even an iota of guile; I’m not trying to use irony here. It’s just the state we’re in- do you know a human who doesn’t deal with pride? I sure don’t. In fact, I just spoke with a prideful woman this morning in the mirror.
Do you believe your words can have the power to help a person in their restoration process? Consider this- didn’t John’s words carry the power to make you this upset in the first place? And moreover, isn’t it the Word of God who breathed all creation into existence? And wasn’t it the Living Word who was pleased to dwell among men?
Yes Love, your words are powerful. But please, wield this sword gently. No need to chop anyone’s ear off. Write from your heart, in love, with compassion, as you would a fellow in the faith. Let your words be seasoned with grace. Keep in mind, Beth’s words as she encourages all of us, as her loyal followers-
She’s holding high the standard, by choosing to “esteem” him as her sibling in Christ. WOW! Remarkable!
I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with Beth in green rooms a couple of times over the last 25 years and I can tell you after spending time with her and her team before they took to the platform, what I saw backstage was the same loving woman I saw on stage. I’ve always been impressed with her humility; by how approachable and kind she was. She has always been a hero of mine but now, more than EVER!
So I challenge you to write about YOUR feelings. And remember the “affirmation sandwich” system as you write;
-Confront (tell him how you feel using “I” statements)

I’ve been praying for you. Sensing you must be tired. And weary. Everyone has been screaming at you for a while for how you spoke about Beth. I’m not here to scream. I want to invite you to get quiet for a moment if you are able…. and listen to my heart.
I’ve learned from you and have the utmost respect for your contributions to the Kingdom of God. Since becoming a Christ follower myself, your words have carried a lot of weight in my life- which is why I feel so HURT.
You may not realize the impact your remarks have had on those of us who call themselves students of Beth Moore, but it has indeed, deeply affected me.
Nothing’s too far gone for our Redeemer’s long arm to reach. No rupture is ever too broken for Him to repair. He can make this right…. and you can play a key role in this redemption.
If you have any desire- even an inkling- to apologize to Mrs. Moore, (not for what you said but for HOW you said it,) I implore you to do it. It would mean the world to believers everywhere and speak volumes of your humility and His goodness.
Please consider my request. It would mean a lot to me, to our sister Beth, to her family. And I have to believe it would lift a load off your own shoulders too. I pray freedom for you. And rest.
Your sister in Christ,
Karthi Masters Nashville, TN
